Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the tournament’s defending champion, are both officially listed in the field but it’s unknown if either will play the event.

This will be the fifth PGA Championship at Southern Hills and the 14th major golf championship in the state of Oklahoma. The last two majors were on the senior circuit; Tiger Woods won the PGA Championship in 2007 for his 13th career major.

Southern Hills is considered one of the best designs from Perry Maxwell, a world-renowned golf architect who also created Dornick Hills in Ardmore and Twin Hills in Oklahoma City. Southern Hills was constructed during the Great Depression when a group of citizens in Tulsa raised $140,000 for a new country club. Local oil baron Waite Phillips donated a tract of land south of downtown.

Maxwell was known for creating golf courses as cost effective as possible, using contours of the land to shape holes and guide the property. That’s what he did with Southern Hills. It opened in 1936 and quickly became a site for major golf tournaments.

Half a century later, the 2007 PGA Championship came to town. Tiger Woods captured the 13th of his 15 major championships, and since, Southern Hills has gone through extensive changes.

Although the layout of the course is similar, Gil Hanse’s renovation, which took 10 months and cost $11 million, changed the future of Southern Hills while bringing it back to its foundation.

PGA Championship Golf Tickets

Tickets remain for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday’s practice rounds, ranging from $25 and $45 on the official PGA Championship website. Some Thursday first-round tickets remain, priced at $195. Tickets for Friday through Sunday’s rounds are sold out but can be purchased on the secondary market.

PGA Championship Golf Field

There are 155 players currently in the field. There is one final spot available to the winner of the AT&T Byron Nelson, if he’s not already in. The field includes 16 PGA Championship winners, 34 major champions, three World Golf Hall of Fame Members, four Ryder Cup captains as well as the top-20 finishers from the 2022 PGA Professional Championship.

PGA Championship Golf TV

For the 39th time and the 32nd consecutive year, CBS will have live coverage of the PGA Championship. This year also marks the 32nd time Jim Nantz will call the action from the 18th hole tower. CBS will have 140 cameras and 150 microphones on the grounds to capture the action.

There will also be live coverage on cable TV on the CBS Sports Network. ESPN+ and Paramount+ will offer live streaming.

PGA Championship Weather

Per weather.com, temperatures will range from the high 80s earlier into the week and drop to the low 80s as the weekend comes. It will be partly cloudy with winds ranging between 10 and 20 MPH. There is a low chance of rain.

The 2007 PGA, staged in August that year, holds the record for the hottest major championship, as temperatures hit 101, 99, 99 and 102 over the four days.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson included in field for 2022 PGA Championship Golf

With the second major golf championship of the year kicking off in just 10 days, it’s becoming clearer which big names will likely be attending.

The official field list was announced Monday for next week’s PGA Championship at Southern Hills Championship Golf Course, which included both Tiger Woods and defending champion Phil Mickelson.

Speculation of Woods competing in the tournament grew after he was spotted at the Oklahoma course last month as part of a scouting trip. Woods was joined by Southern Hills director of golf Cary Cozby as they walked and checked out the course for the first time since his victory there in the 2007 PGA Championship.

“Everything is so smooth with him now,” Cozby said, via Golf Oklahoma. “His rhythm is great, he hit it straight and plenty far, he pitched and putted it great. I know guys can hit it past him now but watching him work was amazing. He’s so meticulous, detailed, and immersed in what he’s doing. He was very inquisitive on lines and the best angles.”

Woods competed in the Masters last month, and despite finishing toward the bottom of the leaderboard, it showed he could go all 72 holes against high-level competition since suffering devastating leg injuries in a February 2021 car crash.

Woods discussed future tournaments after his final round at the Masters, saying he remained unsure about competing at Southern Hills, but planned on playing at the Open Championship in July. He won the PGA Championship four times during his career, in 1999, 2000, 2006 and 2007.

“I won’t be playing a full schedule ever again. It’ll just be the big events. I don’t know if ill play Southern Hills or not, but I am looking forward to St. Andrews. It’s something that’s near and dear to my heart,” Woods said. “I’ve won two Opens there. It’s the home of golf. It’s my favorite golf course in the world. I will be there for that one. But anything in between that, I don’t know. I will try. I will try to get ready this week for Southern Hills, and we’ll see what this body will be able to do.”

Unlike Woods, Mickelson did not compete at the Masters, marking the first time he was absent from the field in nearly 30 years.

Mickelson has been at the center of controversy after he reportedly criticized the PGA Tour and backed a proposed golf league being financed by Saudi Arabians. Mickelson described the Saudis as “scary” but noted he could look past their history of human rights abuses if it meant a chance to change the PGA Tour.

HARRIS ENGLISH ON THE MEND, HOPES TO RETURN AT PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

He made the comments in an interview with author Alan Shipnuck, whose book, “Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar” is scheduled to release later this month. The Fire Pit Collective published Mickelson’s comments in February.

Mickelson later apologized and announced he would be taking a leave from the sport. He claimed his comments were off the record and were not meant to be shared publicly.

“There is the problem of off record comments being share out of context and without my consent,” Mickelson said in a February statement. “But the bigger issue is that I used words I sincerely regret that do not reflect my true feelings or intentions.”

2022 PGA Championship DFS: Top DraftKings, FanDuel daily fantasy golf picks, lineups, sleepers, strategy

The 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club will be the second major of the year. The course has hosted seven majors, but Gil Hanse recently redesigned it to make it a more modern test and that could make setting your PGA DFS lineups a challenge for Wanamaker Week. Tiger Woods won the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills and is currently expected to be in the 2022 PGA Championship field, but can you trust him in your 2022 PGA Championship DFS lineups?

Using Woods in your PGA DFS strategy would be a high-risk, high-reward play given his knack for playing certain courses well. However, it’s a loaded PGA DFS player pool and golf is as deep as it’s ever been, so understanding whose game is best-suited for the moment and layout is critical. Before you lock in your PGA DFS picks for the 2022 PGA Championship, check out the latest daily Fantasy golf picks, advice and player pool from SportsLine’s Mike McClure.

2022 PGA Championship

McClure is a DFS pro with nearly $2 million in career winnings, and he’s been red-hot on his PGA Tour picks this season. McClure is also a predictive data engineer at SportsLine who uses a powerful prediction model that simulates every tournament 10,000 times, taking factors like statistical trends, past results and current form into account. This allows him to find the best PGA DFS values and create optimal lineups that he shares only over at SportsLine. They’re a must-see for any PGA DFS player.

At the Wells Fargo Championship, McClure included Max Homa among his top PGA DFS picks. The result: Homa finished on top of the leaderboard with a score of 8-under par, securing his second win of the season and fourth career victory. Anybody that included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable weekend.

In addition, McClure’s model is up over $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament. This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has set his sights on the 2022 PGA Championship and revealed his optimal PGA DFS advice, strategy and player pool. Head to SportsLine now to see his top daily Fantasy golf picks for the PGA Championship 2022.

2022 PGA Championship golf DFS picks

One of McClure’s top PGA DFS picks for the PGA Championship 2022 is Joaquin Niemann at $8,500 on DraftKings and $10,200 on FanDuel. Niemann turned professional as a 19-year-old in 2018 after spending 44 weeks as the world’s top-ranked amateur and earned his first PGA Tour win before his 21st birthday at the Greenbrier in 2019.

It wound up taking 2 1/2 years for Niemann to earn his second victory, but he proved himself as one of the game’s brightest young stars after it came in a high-profile event hosted by Tiger Woods at the 2022 Genesis Invitational. Niemann went wire-to-wire against a loaded field, and the 23-year-old Chilean is now the No. 17 player in the world. He currently ranks ninth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.368) and that all-around game should serve him well at Southern Hills.

McClure’s optimal PGA DFS strategy also includes rostering Corey Conners ($8,000 on DraftKings, $9,800 on FanDuel). The 30-year-old Canadian was No. 196 in the world just over three years ago and needed a Monday qualifier to get into the 2019 Valero Texas Open, where a win turned his conditional status into a full PGA Tour card and earned him last-minute entrance into that year’s Masters.

Conners has added 12 top-10 finishes to his resume and risen all the way to No. 32 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He’s made the cut in his last seven events and is one of the best drivers on the PGA Tour, ranking in the top 20 in strokes gained off the tee the last five seasons. That will be critical on a par-70 layout that measures 7,556 yards with both par-5s measuring over 630 yards.

How to set 2022 PGA Championship DFS lineups

McClure is also targeting an undervalued player who’s primed to play extremely well, giving you a huge return on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel. Picks like these could be the difference between winning your PGA DFS contests or going home with nothing. You can only see who it is here.

Phil Mickelson withdraws from 2022 PGA Championship field as reigning champion continues hiatus

The PGA of America announced on Friday that defending champion Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from the 104th playing of the PGA Championship at Southern Hills next week. Having been listed in the official field on Monday, speculation still surrounded whether the 51-year-old would actually be in attendance in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

“We have just been informed that Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from the PGA Championship,” said the PGA of America in a statement. “Phil is the defending champion and currently eligible to be a PGA Life Member and we would have welcomed him to participate. We wish Phil and Amy the very best and look forward to his return to golf.”

2022 PGA Championship

Charl Schwartzel will replace Mickelson in the field, while Kramer Hickok will also enter the field for Harris English, who himself withdrew Friday due to injury.

Mickelson reached the highest of highs last year when he became the oldest major champion in history with his victory at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, fending off the likes of Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen. Since then, Lefty has fallen into hot water due to his connection to LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed golf league aiming to rival the PGA Tour.

The six-time major winner has not been seen in a PGA Tour event since January at the Farmers Insurance Open, and he has been out of competition since the Saudi International in early February after his remarks about the Saudi Arabia regime were made public. That did not stop his agent, Steve Loy, from releasing a statement on April 25 regarding his potential playing schedule.

“Our client Phil Mickelson is officially registered to play in the PGA Championship as well as the U.S. Open,” Loy stated. “We have also filed a request on his behalf for a release to play in the first LIV Golf Invitational in London, June 9-11.”

A great deal has transpired since this statement was made public, as PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has denied all waiver requests for those golfers who sought to participate in the first LIV Golf Invitational event. This leaves Mickelson in an even stickier situation. He could very well ignore Monahan’s decision and play in London despite the potential of disciplinary measures from the PGA Tour. However, what would this mean for Mickelson’s career grand slam aspirations?

Without a U.S. Open trophy, the year’s third major championship is set to take place June 16-19, the week following the first LIV Golf Invitational event. The United State Golf Association will have to make a stand one way or another when it comes to Mickelson and other LIV Golf participants.

Only one month away, we will have to wait and see what the USGA ultimately decides. What we do know is with his withdrawal from the PGA Championship official, one less question hovers around Mickelson while many more remain unanswered.
